ABOUT THE TRAFFIC BUREAU

The La Verne Police Department's Traffic Bureau has a continuing responsibility to help keep vehicle traffic moving safely and expeditiously along the network of roadways within the city. Additionally the bureau has a responsibility to ensure the safety of pedestrians, document and report traffic collisions, and the management of traffic related special events within the city.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Traffic Bureau is staffed by three full time motorcycle officer’s and is managed by a Police Lieutenant. In addition Patrol Officers enforce traffic laws on a time permitting basis, which significantly increases the Departments effort at maintaining a high profile traffic enforcement program.

The Traffic Bureau attempts to gain voluntary compliance from motorists to obey
the rules of the road through information, education, and enforcement of traffic laws.
The Traffic Bureau resources are allocated on a complaint and priority need basis
of operation. Each reported citizen traffic safety concern is addressed in the
appropriate manner. In addition primary traffic collision factors and locations are
reviewed to identify problem areas. The two most common primary collision factors
are speed and right of way violations. The following are some statistics of traffic
related incidents in the City in the year 2006:

Citations Issued: Hazardous Citations - 2,465 Non-Hazardous Citations - 1,282 Parking Citations - 4,501 Traffic Collisions: Injury Collisions - 114 Non Injury Collisions - 173

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The La Verne Police Department believes a comprehensive, multifaceted approach is
necessary to maintain a safe roadway system. The Traffic Bureau utilizes a variety of
programs and methods to gain the voluntary compliance of motorists and pedestrians.
The following are an example of some of those programs and methods: Commercial
Checkpoints; DUI/Driver License Checkpoints; Court Sting Programs; High Profile
Motorcycle Traffic Enforcement; Speed Enforcement Operations; Media Press
Releases of Upcoming Enforcement Programs; Speed Reminders Utilizing a Radar
Trailer; Traffic Safety Warnings and Messages with a Portable Message Sign Trailer.

REPORTING TRAFFIC CONCERNS

In order to maintain safe roadways in La Verne it is imperative that the Community,
Police and City work together to address traffic safety issues. We encourage citizens
to report any traffic concerns so appropriate measures can be taken to correct any
problems. In addition we encourage citizens to call with any questions they may
have related to traffic safety issues.

Any hazardous violations in progress can be reported by calling (909) 593-2531,
or 911 if it is an emergency. Questions or concerns about a local traffic safety
problem can be directed to the duty Watch Commander anytime day or night at
(909) 596-1913. Or you can email the Traffic Bureau Lieutenant.

TRAFFIC COLLISION REPORTS

The Traffic Bureau takes and reviews over five hundred traffic collision reports a year. Once the officer completes a collision report or investigation it is processed and reviewed by a traffic investigator for accuracy and to insure the appropriate collision factors are utilized. Collision reports are available for release within 10 days of the traffic collision.

Copies for non-injury traffic collision reports are available for $25.00, injury collision
reports are available for15¢ per page.

PROCEDURE FOR CONTESTING A NOTICE OF PARKING VIOLATION

Within 21 calendar days of the issuance of the parking violation notice, or within
14 days of the mailing of the “Notice of Parking Violation”, the recipient must request
to contest the parking violation either in person, by telephone (909) 596-1913, or by
sending a written request to:
“Parking Review”, La Verne Police Department, 2061 Third Street, La Verne, CA 91750

A representative of the Police Department will review the request.
After a thorough review, a written response will be provided to the contestant and a
copy filed at the Police Department. An information letter is provided with the results
of the administrative review explaining the appeal process.

If the contestant is not satisfied with the results of the administrative review they
may request an administrative hearing. An independent hearing officer contracted
by the City conducts the administrative hearing. The amount of the penalty must
be deposited at the time of the request for the administrative hearing. If the hearing
officer finds in favor of the contestant, the penalty is refunded.

IMPOUNDED VEHICLE RELEASE INFORMATION

In the course of official duties the La Verne Police Department stores or impounds
motor vehicles for a variety of reasons. In the year 2006 La Verne Police stored or
impounded 1,328 vehicles. Of those 711 were impounded for thirty (30) days as a
result of individuals driving unlicensed or driving on suspended licenses.

Individuals questioning the validity of the storage or impound can request an
impound review, which is conducted by the duty Watch Commander.
The review can be conducted on the phone, in person or in writing. A thorough review
of the facts of the impound or storage will be conducted to insure compliance with
applicable laws. The results of the finding will be given to the individual at the
conclusion of the review or as soon as possible.

Most vehicles stored or impounded require an administrative fee of $125.00
payable to the City of La Verne prior to the release of the vehicle.
If the individual was arrested for DUI, the administrative fee is $350.00.
The administrative fee is charged to off set the cost to the City for the impounding of vehicles.
