Detective Martinez became a reserve officer in 1993 and in 1997 he became a full time sworn officer with La Verne Police Department.
Martinez was working patrol when he heard about the special assignment involving Keno with LA IMPACT (Los Angeles Inter Agency Metropolitan Police Apprehension Crime Task Force).
He was selected to become Keno's handler and the friendship began.
Keno is a 6-year-old black lab whose specialty is narcotics detection. She detects marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and opium. She and Detective Martinez are constantly training and attending narcotic seminars and programs.
Keno is a passive alert K-9 who sits when she detects the odor.
Keno has been involved in numerous investigations with LA IMPACT and local agencies and has been credited with literally tons of discovery of various narcotics. The seizures are literally in the millions of dollars. Her largest narcotics seizure was 260 kilos of cocaine, $1.8 million in cash, and numerous firearms.
Keno also assists other agencies with narcotic investigations including:
- building searches
- parcel detection
- vehicle searches
Keno and Detective Martinez have visited many schools in La Verne teaching the youth and demonstrating Keno's keen drug detection skills.
Keno is a welcome sight in our community!
