Safety Classes

The La Verne Police Department Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol program offers several free safety-related classes for groups of 10 children or more. These classes are primarily suited for kindergarten through third grade aged children and last approximately one half hour each.

"Check First"
Teaches children to check with the "adult in charge" before changing their routine or going off to do something. This places the burden of decision-making on adults and protects children against tricks used by those who might hurt children. We use the La Verne Police Department's robotic bear "Checkers" to help explain some of the situations. "Checkers" also helps to teach the children a song to reinforce the training. The class is best suited for groups of 10 to 20 students.

"The Buddy System"
Teaches children when it is appropriate and why it is important to have a "buddy" along so that they will be safer and less vulnerable. We use the La Verne Police Department's robotic bear "Checkers" to help explain some of the situations. "Checkers" also helps to teach the children a song to reinforce the training. The class is best suited for groups of 10 to 20 students.

Disney - I'm No Fool Series
Disney videos are presented with animated Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio to teach and demonstrate "safety" in various places and situations. A 15-minute video is followed by a question and answer period to reinforce what was learned in the video. Topics include: Safety at School, Safety as a Pedestrian, Safety in Unsafe Places (i.e. railroad tracks, crosswalks, pools, storm drains), Safety on Wheels (roller-skating, bicycling and skateboarding), and Safety with a Bicycle .
